U-46 Finalizes Recall of Teachers
A total of 401 teachers have been recalled by School District U-46, the state’s second largest school district serving 11 communities including Elgin, Streamwood, and Bartlett. The number represents slightly more than half of the 757 teachers who received Reduction in Force notices in March.
“We have recalled every teacher on the seniority list who qualified, based on state certification, for a vacant teaching position,” said José M. Torres, Superintendent of School District U-46. “Those remaining on the recall list do not have the necessary state certifications to teach in the remaining 17 vacant highly-specialized positions,” he added.
A total of 332 members of the Elgin Teachers Association remain on the recall list. Another 21 teachers resigned during the recall process, two resigned before the recall process started, and one took a leave of absence.
At the time of the reductions in force, Torres said he expected to recall between 300 and 400 teachers. The over-reduction in teaching staff, he said, was to create enough vacancies to ensure that senior teachers could be recalled into positions for which they qualify based on state certifications.
There remain 17 vacant positions covered by the Elgin Teachers Association in specialized areas and for which there are no teachers on the recall list who hold the required state certification. Examples of vacancies that are still open include Speech/ Language Pathologists, bilingual special education, and English teachers who have a reading endorsement.
The recall process concluded late Friday, June 11.
